THE INTERNET & THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
What most native English speakers don't realize when surfing the internet is that almost the entirety of the content uploaded to it daily is in English. It seems logical, then, to call the age of internet "the information age" – but information for who? As a speaker of multiple languages, I often find myself frustrated trying to find any reliable, accessible information not in English or about non-English speaking countries.
This project of both research and design is my small addition to the information online available in Portuguese. The two posters below are also available for print below.
A INTERNET E O INGLÊS
A maioria das pessoas que falam inglês como primeira língua não percebem quando estão usando a internet que a grande maioria de todo conteúdo na web está em inglês. Logicamente, pra eles, essa nova era de conectividade é chamada então "a era da informação." Mas informação pra quem? Como uma pessoa que fala múltiplas línguas, eu frequentemente me sinto frustrada pesquisando na internet. É muito difícil achar informações confiáveis e acessíveis em línguas diferentes ou sobre países que não falam inglês.
Esse projeto de pesquisa e design é minha pequena adição à informação online em Português. Os dois posters também estão disponíveis para impressão abaixo.

Uncomfortable and alarming data can be hard to accept or digest, unless it is visually accessible and contextualized properly. To me, violence against women is one of the most important issues around the globe, so I started with this and then expanded my research to other themes in feminism and women's empowerment.
The first infographic is titled after a national classic in music, an ode to women, "Brazilian woman, where are you?" It covers workplace inequality, abortion access, physical violence, as well as the "dictatorship of beauty" (as it is known in Brazil.)
Dados desconcertantes e alarmantes podem ser dificeis de aceitar ou digerir, à não ser que os mesmos sejam apresentados de maneira acessível e contextualizada. Para mim, a violência contra a mulher é um dos mais importantes problemas no mundo, então eu comecei com esse tema e logo expandi minha pesquisa para outros assuntos relacionados ao empoderamento da mulher e ao feminismo.
O primeiro infográfico, nomeado honrando um clássico da MPB, fala sobre desigualdade no trabalho, acesso ao aborto, violência física e a ditadura da beleza.

To come up with a color scheme for the next infographic, I created a series of small posters, such as the one below.

THE REVOLUTION OF THE MENSTRUAL CUP
Menstrual products, as well as menstruation in general, are quite taboo in Brazil and around the world. Women are discouraged from discussing it, even to the detriment of their own health. Menstrual cups have just recently appeared in the country, causing a lot of confusion and adverse first reactions. All over the internet, health professional bloggers have taken it upon themselves to answer the barrage of questions and demystify the silicone innovation. In other circles of early adopters, its being hailed as life-changing and revolutionary in the way it allows people connect with their bodies and cycles. I condensed all that info into a poster that would look great in a doctor's waiting room.
A REVOLUÇÃO DO COLETOR MENSTRUAL
Produtos menstruais, assim como a menstruação em geral, são assunto tabu no Brasil e ao redor do mundo. Mulheres sentem vergonha de discutir o assunto até ao ponto que chega a ferir nossa saúde e bem-estar. Coletores menstruais acabam de chegar no país, causando muito bochicho e aversão à primeira vista. Por toda a internet, profissionais de saúde usaram seus blogs para responder a enchente de perguntas que surgiram sobre a inovação de silicone. Em outros círculos, das mais arriscadas, o produto está sendo louvado como uma revolução, mudando nossas vidas no modo como nos conectamos aos nosso corpos e aos nossos ciclos menstruais.
